MICE Statistics for the 2nd Quarter 2017


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 333 MICE events were held in the second quarter of 2017, including 308 meetings & conferences, 11 exhibitions and 14 incentives. Total number of participants and attendees was 405,000. 


Number of meetings & conferences held in the second quarter increased by 16 year-on-year, with number of participants rising by 26.1% to 45,000. Meetings & conferences with 200 participants or more rose by 3 to 54, and number of participants went up by 36.9% to 32,000 (70.8% of total). Meanwhile, meetings & conferences of 4 hours or more increased by 11 year-on-year to 195, with number of participants (36,000) growing by 38.4%; the average duration of these meetings & conferences was 1.9 days, the same as in the second quarter of 2016. The overall average duration of the meetings & conferences was 1.4 days.


Number of exhibitions held in the second quarter decreased by 7 year-on-year to 11, bringing the number of attendees down by 14.0% to 351,000. Among the exhibitions, 10 were organised by non-government organisations, with number of attendees dropping by 15.0% year-on-year to 342,000. The overall average duration of the exhibitions stood at 3.8 days, up by 0.4 day year-on-year; total floor area used decreased by 2.1% to 84,000 m2. Number of incentives increased by 6 year-on-year to 14 while number of participants (8,670) registered a decline of 62.9%. The average duration of the incentives was 3.1 days and total floor area used was 22,000 m2.


In accordance with information provided by the exhibition organisers, receipts of the 11 exhibitions totalled MOP 77.51 million, with rental receipts of exhibition booths accounting for the majority at 74.5%. Expenditure totalled MOP 56.39 million, which was mainly incurred on production, construction & decoration (29.6%), rental paid for the venue (17.4%) and publicity & public relations (15.9%). With regard to the 10 exhibitions organised by non-government organisations, receipts amounted to MOP 76.40 million, of which 74.2% was generated from rental receipts of exhibition booths; meanwhile, financial support from government and other organisations (MOP 3.54 million) contributed merely 4.6% of the total, down by 4.8 percentage points from 9.4% in the second quarter of 2016. Expenditure amounted to MOP 33.06 million, of which production, construction & decoration and rental paid for the venue took up 32.8% and 23.1% respectively. After deducting the expenditure and financial support from government and other organisations from the receipts, the exhibitions organised by non-government organisation recorded net receipts of MOP 39.81 million, an improvement from MOP 16.59 million in the second quarter of 2016. 


The exhibitions in the second quarter attracted 1,140 exhibitors, with 28.7% coming from Mainland China and 28.1% from Macao. Meanwhile, professional visitors totalled 22,000, with those from Macao making up 36.4%. The exhibitions organised by non-government organisations drew 684 exhibitors (35.8% from Hong Kong) and 15,000 professional visitors (34.5% from Macao).


Information from 298 interviewed exhibitors in the second quarter indicated that 99.1% of their receipts were generated from sales of products, while rental paid for exhibition booths accounted for 53.5% of their expenditure. Regarding comments from the interviewed exhibitors, 50.5% were satisfied with the promotion of the exhibition, up by 7.7 percentage points quarter-to-quarter; the proportions of those who complimented on venue management (78.5%) and professionalism of venue staff (80.3%) went up by 12.2 percentage points and 16.4 percentage points respectively. Among the interviewed exhibitors who had used services rendered by local companies, the proportions of those who were satisfied with the services (73.6%) and the arrangements (73.6%) of local companies increased 1.6 percentage points and 7.2 percentage points respectively quarter-to-quarter.


In the first half year of 2017, a total of 699 MICE events were held and total number of participants and attendees was 627,000. Number of meetings & conferences increased by 66 year-on-year to 652, and number of participants surged by 61.9% to 99,000. Meetings & conferences of 4 hours or more went up by 77 to 442, with number of participants soaring by 98.3% to 79,000. Number of exhibitions decreased by 4 year-on-year to 18, bringing the number of attendees (514,000) down slightly by 0.7%. There were 17 exhibitions organised by non-government organisations, with number of attendees decreasing by 1.4% to 505,000. Number of incentives increased by 9 year-on-year to 29, while number of participants (13,000) dropped by 48.1%. In accordance with information collected from the organisers of 18 exhibitions in the first half year of 2017, receipts and expenditure of these exhibitions amounted to MOP 83.01 million and MOP 61.98 million respectively, with receipts (MOP 81.90 million) of the 17 exhibitions organised by non-government organisations being higher than their expenditure (MOP 38.66 million). The net receipts of these exhibitions after deducting the expenditure and financial support from government and other organisations was MOP 38.55 million, an upsurge of 158.3% from MOP 14.92 million in the first half year of 2016.
